Trim Carpentry

What is the Difference Between Finish and Trim in Carpentry? It is a common question, as they are similar. Finish carpentry is the last step of a carpenter’s work. Trim carpentry specializes in installing or repairing trim or molding. Which is often the final stage of carpentry work (hence the overlap in the usage of words). Tasks like cutting and installing trim, such as that found around windows, and doors. and baseboards. Often ornamental pieces like crown moldings and fireplace mantle assembly and installation.

It is imperative to see the nuances of meaning between the terms. Regardless of how the definition may be misunderstood. Such as how simple or sophisticated one may perceive the tasks of Trim or Finish Carpentry.

Classic proportions of the custom hand-made pediment element applied to the door installation. Are shown above. This client reached out to Wm of Alexanders. With a challenge to design and fabricate a ‘classic’ pediment and pilasters. Create a monumental space in his large foyer. Drawing from architectural education and study we milled the molding, and turned finials. Cut columns and finials in half. Installed the assembly to fit over the existing door frames.  The look and feel bring the typical large foyer back to Greek or Roman times.

Continuing with doors, next is a new opening to expand a game room with a guest bedroom option.  The client had salvaged boards and we at Alexander’s made the doors, along with drywall, trim, and paint. This next project is very cool! Do you agree?

A picture is worth a thousand words. Next, we show an existing Island Cabinet modification. We added the frame and newel posts for overhang support. We also cut the frame and modified it for a country-style sink. That included custom-matching new doors for a smaller opening underneath. Drawing on our Custom Cabinetry and shop experience this is a basic project

While performing trim carpentry Alexander’s uses design education and many years of experience. That allows us to execute the detailed work, giving you all the assurances needed. For the easiest to the most challenging projects.

Modification of an existing Kitchen Island. The existing sink base cabinet needed parts removed. With new face frame components added, using surgical precision. What’s more, new Cabinet Doors were custom made and the country kitchen sink fit the cabinetry. Achieving the tightest fit possible is always important. On top of that, a new countertop extension frame and beefy-turned legs. Supporting new work surface.

Finish Carpenter

Design education and many years of experience working on stairs are great assets. Often can include complex work for a Trim Carpenter or Finish Carpenter. Allow us here to show even more challenging jobs, giving you all the assurance needed for easier ones.

The first is a full staircase installation. The prefabricated stair carriage carried into the house. In compliance with the building codes, Alexander’s placed, fitted, and installed it. The handrails were custom bent and fit and then installed along with the landing volute. This was all part of the ‘finish carpentry’ for a new construction home.

Our final project shows another stairway, this time outside. It is a free-form exterior stairway aligned with the contours of the wall. This was a fun project with a winding set of stairs with irregular angles and dealing with round walls.

This project utilized treated lumber for exterior use. A finish carpenter is not limited to interior work. It required a full set of stair-building knowledge to construct. The winder set of stairs, proper structural support, and handrail are of interest. Making the matching round handrail was one of the easier tasks, too.

It can be very easy to overlook the specialty associated with this craft.
